Students continue to take the lead in the fight against drugs and substance abuse during the week-long national awareness in schools.

At Davuilevu Methodist Primary School, students commenced the programme with a procession throughout the surrounding community led by the Fiji National Youth Band attracting community support.

Programme co-ordinator Makereta Takalaivuna said the programme was initially planned to extend awareness to the nearby communities to join the fight against drug abuse, violence and illicit trafficking.

“The Davuilevu Housing community and the stakeholders of the school were made aware by the children’s declarations throughout the march.

“The children resounded their hearts when they marched with confidence, declaring: ‘We are smart; we know what to do, we gonna say, no to you! Say no to drugs, say no to drugs’,” she said.

Vodafone Flying Fijians rep Seremaia Bai, who was their chief guest, was an added boost in motivating students.

“Seremaia Bai had motivated all the children to work hard and to be involved in constructive and important activities, like rugby than being involved in drug abuse.

“Despite the drizzling rain, the whole school enjoyed the programme. It was really a day that we will never forget,” Mrs Takalaivuna said.

School head teacher Paiata Faga Savukiono said: “It had a big impact in the community because there are a lot of neighbouring settlements around our school.

“We have seen that our programme drew a lot of attention especially from the young people,” Mr Savukiono said.

“The students also know the consequences of drug abuse and were encouraged to say no to drugs.”

Meanwhile the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking’s week-long awareness programme was launched by Minister for Education Mahendra Reddy on Monday at Delainamasi Government School in Nasinu.
