In the interest of safety and maintaining road width, Fulton Hogan Hiways (FHH) keeps roadsides trimmed and vegetation cut back.

FHH supervisor for rural east area, central Iliesa Tuikenatabua said the rural/urban clean-up service ‘‘helps with visibility as vegetation tends to regrow quite fast.”

He said: “When FHH road inspectors, or anyone from the company, sees that the vegetation is thick and the grass is long we send out a crew to clean the identified area.

“This is part of the FHH monthly rural and urban clean-up responsibility that includes the tiding up of footpaths, curbs, and roadside water channels of any trash or vegetation debris as well as mowing village frontage.”

Mr Tuikenatabua said the work was part of the overall Fulton Hogan Hiways effort of making the roads safer for both motorists and pedestrians.

“Tall grass and vegetation impair visibility especially on road curves making it difficult for drivers to see oncoming traffic,” he said.

“Additionally roadsides that have not been mowed can also pose a danger for pedestrians who are often forced to walk on the road because of high grass.”

The importance to villagers was summed up by Serea villager, Saimoni Ratuvou: ‘‘Mowing and cleaning village grass road frontage might look like a little job, but this is a huge contribution that Fulton Hogan Hiways makes to all the villages along the Sawani and Serea roads.”

His village is one of the many in the central and northern divisions that enjoy the clean-up service provided by FHH mowing crews.

Fulton Hogan Hiways works closely with Fiji Roads Authority to provide road maintenance in the central, eastern and northern divisions.
