Make Use Of Sports Day: Tuitubou

The public is encouraged to organise sporting activities and participate in physical activity during this year’s National Sports Day holiday.
This is the central message conveyed by the Minister for Youth and Sports Laisenia Tuitubou to all members of society as the upcoming public holiday offers exciting opportunities for communities to come together to get active and have fun.
“The upcoming National Sports Day is a means to promote the benefits of participating actively in sporting activities.
“Its main purpose is to spread the message of combating non-communicable diseases and to celebrate the contribution of sports to the nation and community, so people are encouraged to participate as a community during this upcoming public holiday by organising sporting activities,” Mr Tuitubou said.
Since sports had significant social and economic impacts to the nation it was appropriate to celebrate it nationwide.
“Professional sportsmen and women who ply their trade overseas have contributed positively towards the country through remittances paid through Government and we also know full well what sports can do for you individually and as a nation which is why we want you to join in during the National Sports Day in your respective communities,” he said.
Mr Tuitubou said that with the economic and health benefits of sports participation being influential in curbing associated health bills, Fijians needed to actively engage themselves in sporting activity.
The National Sports Day will be celebrated on June 24 with the theme, ‘Resilient Healthy Community through Sports for a Wealthy Fiji’ as it is based on the use of sports as a tool to rehabilitate our communities after the devastation of Tropical Cyclone Winston and to also acknowledge the resilience of our communities in the face of adversity.
