The increase in the salary of Government doctors will curb brain drain in the medical fraternity.

Last night Minister for Finance Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum announced during the 2016-2017 Budget Announcement pay increase from 56 per cent to 81 per cent for all Government-paid doctors.

This will amount to a total $40.7 million. Health Minister, Jone Usamate said this was something the doctors deserved

“We hope that as a result of this, we are able to keep people and develop them.

“A lot of our doctors today are very young, we keep losing the ones that are more mature. And when you are able to retain your good, well qualified workers, you can provide better service.”

Improving better service for the public remains a priority for the Health Ministry.

“Improving service is something that you do continually. You do it by making sure you have a good work force, by making sure that you do improve processes, improve systems and improve the culture of the organisation.”

With a new complaints system soon to be put in place, Mr Usamate was optimistic of the outcomes it will bring.

“Every time someone complains about the ministry, I tend to see it as a gift to us because it’s giving us an indication that there could be something potentially wrong, it gives us an opportunity to improve something.”

Also Post Graduate studies will be paid by Government for students who take up medical studies from the Fiji National University to help them stay abreast with their studies in medicine.

“All of this is possible madam Speaker and is part and parcel of the review process that is taking place.”

Government has also allocated $250,000 for the complaints mechanism to enable people to lodge a complaint about the treatment they receive from the health service staff, he added.
