Opposition Whip Ratu Isoa Tikoca has withdrawn from the SODELPA party leader contest.

While he declined to comment yesterday, it is understood that he decided to pull out because of a pending court case.

It is also understood that he will support Mr Rabuka.

With his withdrawal, there are four contestants left, former prime minister Sitiveni Rabuka, MP Viliame Gavoka, former diplomat and public service executive Anare Jale and MP Ro Kiniviliame Kiliraki.

Mr Rabuka, Mr Gavoka and Ro Kiniviliame were interviewed yesterday by a panel in Suva. Members of the management board were also present.

Mr Jale will be interviewed this morning.

It is understood that Mr Rabuka and Mr Gavoka were running neck and neck after yesterday’s robust interview process. Despite Mr Rabuka’s impressive record in terms of leadership, Mr Gavoka gave a powerful presentation during his interview.

Mr Jale will have to put on a flawless performance this morning to beat Mr Rabuka and Mr Gavoka.

After his interview yesterday, Mr Rabuka said if he was to be appointed leader he would need to work very hard.

Mr Rabuka said the questions during the interview were good and he answered them well.

“They needed to be answered well so that people have a better understanding of who you are and whether you are suitable for the role; it was a good interview,” he said.

“I am just equal with others so I will leave it to the panel to make the decision,” he said.

Mr Rabuka was still convinced that true unity based on mutual respect and acceptance was the way forward for Fiji.

The new leader would be announced at the party’s annual general meeting in Suva tomorrow..
