Students Learn Golf

The first Fijian International school golf programme was held at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial School in Suva yesterday.
The programme intends to teach the basics of the game to students in schools around Viti Levu.
Fijian International events manager Harmony Thomas said there would be six sessions for every school on a monthly basis.
“We’re going to socialise the game of golf and that’s why we are targeting primary school students,” Thomas said.
“They get a chance to swing, to see what a golf ball or club looks like and they are enjoying it.”
Thomas said each school included in the programme would have the opportunity to send their children to the Fijian International in October.
“We also have a competition where all the students involved in this programme will be designing the junior mascot. The winner gets $500 and the school $500.”
Principal education officer (primary), Marika Baleca who was present at the first sessionsaid: “We thank Fijian International for what they have done for our students in terms of preparing them to play golf at a young age.”
Fijian International hopes to increase the number of schools taking part in the programme in future. So far 2700 students are involved in the programme.
