Vodafone Fijian 7s head coach Ben Ryan is grateful to Government for providing incentives for athletes winning medals at the Rio Olympics in August.

$30,000 will be given to players winning gold, $20,000 for silver and $10,000 for bronze medal.

“Our programme won’t be surviving to this level if it wasn’t for our Government support this year,” Ryan said.

“I’m very grateful for that as it’s going to make a difference come the Olympic Games.

“I’m also grateful for the boys and for their families who will benefit from this if we get on the podium. It’s a huge boost for them if they win gold.”

Ryan strongly believes the players effort towards success is not for money, but for national pride.

“I also believe nobody strives for winning gold medals based on finances. These boys are going to be giving everything.

“I would hope when their lungs are burning on the floor and they can’t move, they thinking about not letting their country and their teammates down, not about $30,000.”

Fitness

“Fitness level is much better than last week.

“Next week is going to be a hell week for them. It will be the hardest week they will probably have the whole year, some of them in their lives and they need to hang in there.

“It will be interesting if you speak to some of these boys next Friday or Saturday.

“We got a phenomenal athlete in Leone Nakarawa, he is coming in good shape, and he wants to keep going.

“Waisea Nayacalevu and Samisoni Viriviri know they got to improve their fitness and same for Semi Kunatani. We got individual goals for everyone and all of them are working towards that target that we are expecting at the moment.”

Close watch on Rawaca

Ryan keeps a close watch on winger Savenaca Rawaca’s diet.

Rawaca will pair up with Patrick Osborne in the wings against Georgia in the test match today.

“We’ve been monitoring him, we know exactly what’s he’s eating in every meal and make him work hard. We know if he sheds a few kilogrammes, he will be in devastating form,” Ryan said.

“Save need to play as he will be joining Saracens. He’s a prospect for 2019 RWC.

“In my opinion when you look at Rawaca, Josua Tuisova, Viriviri,  Vatemo Ravouvou, Kolinisau and Kunatani, these guys should all be in the 2019 RWC squad.”
