Dead....Tulia Verebasaga

A dream of a six-year-old girl to become a doctor to look after her father  came crashing down on Thursday.

She was crossing the road when she was hit by a vehicle driven by a 31-year-old salesperson and died later from her injuries.

Tulia Verebasaga, a Year One student of Assemblies of God Primary School, was her dad’s only child.

The incident occurred along Kalokalo Crescent in Nasinu around 3pm. It is understood that the victim got off the bus and then ran across the road from the back of the bus.

The victim’s father Ratu Isikeli Tuiwailevu, 39, was in Wainibuka, Tailevu attending a funeral on Thursday when he received a call that her daughter had been admitted in the hospital.

He said: “My daughter was my world because she was our only child.

“She wanted to become a doctor to look after me when I grow old. But, her dreams are now shattered.”

Tulia was rushed to the Colonial War Memorial (CWM) Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Mr Tuiwailevu said: “They did not tell me that my daughter was dead. When I reached the hospital, I saw my daughter’s body.

“I could not hold back my tears. I will miss her,” he said.

Tulia’s mother was in Kinoya at her relatives place for the past three months because she was sick.

Tulia’s was always picked up by her relatives after school, but on Thursday she was picked up by her uncle, Jovilisi Vulea.

Mr Vulea said they boarded the bus and on their way to home Tulia was asking about everyone at home.

“I told her to wait and meet them when we reach home,” he said.

“When we got off the bus, Tulia just ran across the road and she was hit by the vehicle,” he said.

Mr Vulea said he was calling Tulia to wait for him but she just crossed the road and things happened so quickly.

Meanwhile, in the Western Division, a 10-year-old boy was admitted at the Lautoka Hospital after he was hit by a private car driven by a 26-year-old man of Saru, Lautoka.

The boy tried to run across the road along Namoli Avenue in Lautoka when the accident happened.

The driver failed to stop after the accident but he was found later and takenin by Police for questioning.

The child is admitted at the Lautoka Hospital for observation while the driver remains in custody as investigations continue.
