Fiji celebrated National Sports Day public holiday around the country yesterday.

The President Major-General (Ret’d) Jioji Konrote was the chief guest during the celebration at the University of the South Pacific.

“Rugby has contributed as much as $100 million through remittances into our national economy.

“Sports help to promote good health and wellbeing.

“This is a key reason why we have gathered to encourage all Fijians to be actively involved in sports and in any other form of physical activity.”

This day is set to allow all citizens of Fiji to understand the benefit of participating in sporting activities and to celebrate sports as a means of acquiring required physical fitness for a healthy lifestyle.

“Fiji needs civil servants who are not only highly intellectual, honest and committed but the nation importantly need healthy workers,” Konrote said.
