Craig Powell says the Government needs to be given some credit for the courage it has taken to confront some challenging issues.

The Shangri-La’s Fijian Resort and Spa general manager said:“Let’s be realistic, they are never going to appease all and give everyone what they want, as there will always be competing interests.”

“The important thing is the Government recognised the fundamental financial implications of their decisions in a global environment whereby the health of the world economy at this time is not great,” said Mr Craig.

“Our major market for tourism into Fiji is out of Australia and will continue to be for some time, so we must be careful of the burden we place on the industry with increased taxes.

He added the Australian dollar was soft and had weakened against the US dollar and domestic tourism in their country had risen as a consequence.

“Many of the tourism operators in Fiji have put out aggressive offers in their respective markets to ensure the country can continue to improve visitor arrivals,” Mr Craig added.

“Tourism is the biggest foreign exchange earner for the country and we applaud the Government for the increased funding they have provided for the tourism industry,” he said.

“In addition to improving air access into the country with our national carrier from a new source market such as Singapore.”

He said it was easy to forget what was given to us but we will not forget to show our appreciation and take Government for granted.
