Telecom Fijian Warriors first –five eighth  Alivereti Mocelutu kicked a penalty to give Northland a famous 23-22 victory over Naitasiri in the Skipper Cup match at Sila Central High School in Nausori yesterday.

At fulltime, Mocelutu successfully converted a 22-metre penalty to steal the game away from the Highlanders.

What happened: Naitasiri led 17-11 at halftime but they tried hard to contain a fired up Northland in the second half.

Veresi Daku, Vilimoni Malorua and Waisale Vatuvoka scored a try each while Etonia Ravatukawa added two conversions and a penalty for Naitasiri. On the other hand, Northland’s first five-eighth Ilimeleki Leiloma was at his best form kicking five penalties while Nasoni Nasedra scored a try.

Mocelutu came into the field with five minutes remaining and made the difference.

Star turn: Mocelutu made the most of it in the last few minutes of the match. He created the opportunities and was rewarded with a penalty to give the side victory.

Big play: Nasedra played a big role in Northland’s victory. He scored a crucial try in the first half to keep Northland within reach of Naitasiri at halftime.

Comments: Northland coach Timoci Tinaviti was grateful with the win.

“I’m confident of turning the fortunes of this team when I was appointed the coach of the team this season.

“I’ve a mission to accomplish and that is to win the competition and I’m confident we will win our first title.

“The win has strengthened our chances of qualifying for the semi- finals.

The former national 7s and Naitasiri rep said he had no regret winning against his home side.

“I’ve a mission to accomplish with Northland as a coach and I’m confident in my players.”
