The Social Democratic Liberal Party will finalise their candidates for the 2018 elections by April next year, says party vice-president Anare Jale.

Mr Jale made the announcement during the party annual general meeting last Friday.

Those interested in standing for the party are expected to send in their expressions of interest by December 2016.

Concerns were raised from the floor that the naming of candidates was too late leading up to election year.

Mr Jale maintained that the party would follow the criteria set out in its constitution.

If changes were to be made, he said this would have to go through the right process.

In his annual report, party president Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu highlighted a number of issues conducted in the past 12 months.

“We revised our party constitution, to position our party for victory, to enable credible leadership, and improve internal party governance.”

Board members have also been levied $1000 per member.

“We have set out to establish constituency councils in all of our provinces and peri-urban and urban centres, and we have successfully managed to establish 26 of the 28 constituency councils.”

Four SODELPA chapters have been formed in Australia;  NSW, South Australia, Melbourne and Queensland.

Chapters have also been formed in the US and Australia.

He said a working committee that would sit between board meetings to map out and attend to urgent matters of the party, have produced and reviewed various working documents including the party’s strategic plan which was launched in March, the Media Policy and the Accounting and Financial Policy.

“We have also had six meetings of the management board, some of which were to resolve the Gaunavinaka impasse.”

Ratu Naiqama is the SODELPA president, chairperson of the general assembly, chairperson of the management board and chairperson of the working committee.
