Gill Gemming believes there will be exciting games in the 2016 Hockey World League which starts at the National Hockey Centre in Suva today.

The Oceania Hockey continental development officer said Fiji would face stiff competition from teams like Solomon Islands.

“We are going to see progress in the competition this year,”Gemming said.

“I’m looking forward to Solomon Island’s men and women playing the very first time in any international competition, which is very exciting for us.

“The Solomon women’s team never played outside Honiara before and the men’s team is a new one formed nine months ago.

“They are very athletic as many of them come from a soccer background. I think there will be upsets this week and I still think Fiji is a favourite in both men and women.”

Solomon Islands have also started with their development programme.

Fijian Hockey president Dr Robin Mitchell said Fiji is glad to host the competition.

“We are lucky to host the tournament and the majority of the officials are Pacific islanders, that’s the programme Gill has been pushing throughout  the region,”he said.

Samoa pulled out from the competition and Gemming said she would be visiting Samoa next month.

“It’s an area we are going to address. I’m going to visit Samoa next month as they have had some difficulties after losing their hockey field.”

Fiji men’s play Tonga in the opening match at 9am today.
