Pregnant women in rural areas continue to benefit through the ‘Food Voucher Programme’

The Food Voucher Programme was allocated $0.5million in the 2016-2017 Budget which comprise a $30 per month food voucher for the duration of 10 months for the recipients.

Attorney-General and Minister for Finance Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said the continuation of the scheme is to reduce cases of malnutrition and complications during pregnancy period.

“The Fijian Government has made foods specially prepared for infants to be duty free in the 2016-2017 Budget.

There has also been an allocation of $170,000 to the Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation to establish a ‘Domestic Violence Helpline’.

This 24-hour toll-free domestic violence helpline will provide a reporting and free referral platform for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said the Government was dedicated towards the protection of women’s right and reducing the incidence of violence against women.

“We must unite to stop violence and protect our young ones.

“Women, girls and boys must know that they are not alone,” he said.
