Athletics Fiji has shifted preparation to the University of the South Pacific grounds this week as they prepare for the Melanesian Athletics Championships which starts next Thursday at the ANZ Stadium.

Team Fiji manager Calvin Yee confirmed to SUNsports yesterday due to the unavailability of the Stadium this week they were now training at the USP grounds.

“This week we have been advised that we cannot use any facilities at the stadium which is a setback to our preparation but we have no option but to use the USP ground.

“We are calling all our Suva based athletes to meet at USP grounds for training.

“We want to thank USP for giving us all their grounds to use we are so grateful,” Yee said.

He also confirmed they have received green light from the Ministry of Education for secondary school athletes and teachers to participate next week.

“We have received official confirmation; the release from the Ministry for these athletes and teachers to take a one week off next week and be part of the competition and this is great news for us,” Yee said.

Team Fiji will march into camp next Monday where they will have a week full training sessions with 230 athletes.

“Next Monday we will have a special bus picking up athletes from Ba and will come through queen’s highway right to Suva.

“We will also be having athletes from Vanua Levu and Kadavu all coming in on Monday,” Yee added.

The Melanesian Athletics Championships will serve as the last qualifier for Oceania teams to the 2016 Rio Olympics.
