Assistant Minister for Health Veena Bhatnagar has confirmed that an investigation is currently underway in relation to the death of Nadi businessman Mohammad Khaiyum at Nadi Hospital.

The 49-year-old, died at the emergency unit at about 4:30 in the morning of June 9 and it is alleged that the nurses at the Nadi Hospital did not give him urgent medical attention when he visited the hospital the day earlier.

Mrs Bhatnagar said: “The matter is currently under investigation and we are waiting for the report from the Nadi Hospital.”

She said once the report from the risk manager was filed a meeting would be held.

Meanwhile Ministry of Health spokesperson, Sunil Chandra said: “That is a death case and the Minister will give comments. The ministry will investigate but we have to verify the claims first.”

Meanwhile the incident came into the spotlight after two videos were uploaded on Facebook showing how Mr Khaiyum was in severe pain when he was calling for medical attention.

The video showed that a nurse walked past Mr Khaiyum a few times ignoring Mr Khaiyum’s calls for help.
