Church To Work With Govt, NGOs On Climate Change

The Methodist Church in Fiji is going to collaborate with Government and non-governmental organisations on issues of climate change.
This was confirmed by the secretary for Christian Citizenship and Social Services Reverend Iliesa Naivalu on Monday.
He said Phase One was a broad one as it looked at strengthening church building structures, ministers and members houses and do training on disaster risk reductions.
“We will emphasise on our rural members to plant root crops that are resilient during natural disasters,” Reverend Naivalu said.
He urged members to plant root crops like yams, kawai, tivoli and dalo-ni-tana as well as sweet potatoes at all times as it took only three months to mature which could supplement food rations after a disaster.
“This is an exciting period in the church because with the help of our partners from abroad and the experience of our members as we are able to move from disaster response mode to a disaster risk reduction mode,” Reverend Naivalu said.
