A couple whose day-old baby girl mysteriously died at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital in Suva are not satisfied with the outcome of the conference to discuss the case.

“The doctors have not answered all our questions and have not clearly explained to us how our baby died,” said the baby’s father, 32-year-old Roneet Chand.

“They’re saying the cause of death was that the baby defecated during the delivery and because of that the baby was not able to breathe.”

Mr Chand and the baby’s mother, Priya Devi, 28, were called to a family conference by Assistant Minister Veena Bhatnagar yesterday. Ms Bhatagar had assured the parents last week that all the questions the parents had would be answered.

But the couple were visibly not happy after the family conference.

At the meeting, Ms Bhatnagar told the family that communication breakdown was the cause of misunderstanding between the mother of the baby and the intern doctor who took the baby around 2am.

The intern doctor who was responsible for this has been counselled for miscommunication, said Ms Bhatnagar.

“The intern doctor has said sorry to us saying there was miscommunication,” Mr Chand said.

Mr Chand claimed that the doctors had sent a sample of the baby’s liver overseas to determine the cause of the death.

Mr Chand said he will meet with family members and then decide what action to take next.

Ms Bhatnagar said: “From the family conference I have found out there was communication breakdown.”
