Assistant Minister for Health Veena Bhatnagar has confirmed that a root cause analysis is currently underway in relation to the death of Nadi businessman Mohammad Khaiyum at Nadi Hospital.

The 49-year-old, died at the Emergency Unit at about 4:30am June 9 and it has been claimed by his family that the nurses at the Nadi Hospital did not give him urgent medical attention when he visited the hospital the day earlier.

Ms Bhatnagar said: “Right now the information that I have received from SDMO in Nadi was the patient was attended to, and was sitting in a hospital bed with oxygen.”

According to Ms Bhatnagar Mr Khaiyum has  had a long health record at Nadi Hospital and  there was  another staff nurse that was attending to the deceased and after putting him on the bed had gone to get some folders, when this other nurse  who was in the video was passing by.

“But it was unfortunate that one of the nurses walked past and she was going to attend to another patient, that’s when his son stopped her and asked her for her name,” Ms Bhatnagar said.

The incident came to light after two videos were uploaded on social media Facebook showing how Mr Khaiyum was in severe pain when he was calling for medical attention.

The video showed that a nurse walked past Mr Khaiyum a few times ignoring his call for help.

Ms Bhatnagar said she was eager to meet the family and also hear their side of the story.
