Close to 60,000 tonnes of sugar cane has been crushed so far by the Labasa Sugar Mill.

Fiji Sugar Corporation executive chairman Abdul Khan confirmed this yesterday as the mill entered its third week of crush.

Mr Khan said the crushing so far has produced 5200 tonnes of raw sugar.

Considering the TSTC (tonne of sugar per tonne of cane), Mr Khan said the present figure was just over 10 which was in line for their expectation for the season.

Mr Khan said with that amount of sugarcane crushed, there was another 600,000mt of sugar cane to process.

Mr Khan said the mill had been performing well since the beginning of the crushing season.

“There haven’t been any major issues other than the normal teething problems expected as we start the mill.”

Mr Khan said they were hoping the supply of cane to the mill would increase.

“We are reasonably comfortable but it will be better if the supply was higher.

“We are asking farmers to continue with the supply of cane so that we can have all the cane processed as quickly as possible,” he said.

As for the other two mills, Lautoka and Rarawai, which are due to begin crushing in two weeks time, Mr Khan said everything was ready for the new season.

“We are still aiming to be ready by 19th July for Lautoka and 20 July for Rarawai,” he said.
