In this fast moving world, people are forgetting their culture and history.

In a bid for people to appreciate their culture and country’s history, the Fiji Museum in conjunction with National Archives of Fiji, National Trust, The Suva City Council and Mareqeti Viti, or Nature Fiji  for the first time organised the ‘NA KORO’ Market.

About 44 women from different villages around the country showcased their talents with their artwork.

Market organiser Peter Sipeli said: “I want to bring people back here because I feel Suva is moving so fast and people are forgetting that Suva is very historical and it has cultural significance.

“This place (Fiji Museum) is called Na Koro.

“This was village of Suva before and people were moved from this place,” he said.

“This is a market where women also showcase their talents.

“About 80 per cent of vendors in Fiji are women and women are also  the heart of their family,” he said.

While the women showcased their talents, children took part in games organised for them.

Fiji Museum head of public relations and marketing Prakashni Sharma said: “NA KORO market will now be held first Sunday of every month.

“We are supporting and showcasing talents of ladies from the different villages in the country for youths to know about their culture and Fiji’s history.”
