Fiji’s home of regattas – Musket Cove Island Resort and Marina on Malolo Lailai Island – is all set to welcome the 31 sailing boats of the World ARC rally this week.

The World ARC rally is an epic voyage around the world involving sailing yachts from 11-18 metres.

It started from the Caribbean island of Saint Lucia in January and will return there next April.

The fleet will have sailed in excess of 7500 nautical miles to reach Musket Cove since starting their voyage from Rodney Bay, Saint Lucia.

Musket Cove Island Resort Sales and Marketing Manager Alex Raicebe said in total 31 boats and over 300 people would take part in World ARC 2016-17.

“Some sailing the full 26,000 miles, others join the fleet for several stages. With starts every year, some boats will take a year out in the Pacific and complete their circumnavigation with a subsequent edition of the rally,” he said.

The largest boat is 18.90m Oyster 62 Wishanger II, and the smallest is 10.72m Albin Strauss Ain’t Fancy.

The fleet includes 12 catamarans, 10 of which started in Saint Lucia.

World ARC is an international event, with boats sailing under the flags of 18 nations, and crews coming from more than 20 countries.

Raicebe said a warm welcome was sure to await them from the team at Musket Cove who would host the round-the-world fleet during their stay.

“The Resort will host the fleet for a four day stopover as part of their circumnavigation with crews representing 15 nationalities will enjoy a BBQ, a Fijian Feast and an activities afternoon as well as many of the numerous activities which the resort offers,” he said.

Following the start, the fleet has since crossed the Pacific Ocean calling at the Galapagos Islands, French Polynesia (including Tahiti and Raiatea), Niue and Tonga.

World ARC 2016-17 will be the sixth edition of the rally, and the ninth round-the-world rally organised by World Cruising Club.
