Education Minister Mahendra Reddy yesterday corrected the Opposition on claims that that  85,000 students still studied in tents in Tropical Cyclone Winston hit areas.

Yesterday, Opposition SODELPA Member of Parliament Salote Radrodro had claimed in Parliament that 85,000 students were studying in tents. She had made similar comments during the last Parliament sitting, which was widely reported by some media.

“At this juncture, I want to clear the air on incorrect information being circulated by members of opposition about the number of students studying in tents. Madam speaker, you may recall Honourable Salote Radrodro during the last session, informed this house that more than 85,000 students are studying under tents.

“Madam Speaker this is far from the truth. There are only 4484 students currently in tents. This is only 2.1 per cent of the 211,385 students we have in our schools.”

This  prompted Speaker of Parliament Dr Jiko Luveni to caution Members of Parliament to “be factual when presenting statistics.”

She said that any misinformation and incorrect statistics presented in Parliament was disrespecting the Parliament.

Mr Reddy also presented figures on Government investment in early childhood education, primary school and high school.

In response to another opposition MP Sela Nanovo’s claim’s that Government had not done anything for Kadavu, Mr Reddy revealed:
