The trial of Parveen Kumar Bala, now the Minister for Local Government, Urban Development, Housing and Environment, started at the Latuoka Magistrates Court yesterday.

Kumar, charged under the name of Bala, is charged with causing the death of Puna Chand, by dangerous driving at Teidamu near Lautoka.

An application from the Prosecution to conduct a Skype session with Doctor James Goundar, in Brisbane, Australia was granted.

Doctor Goundar conducted the post mortem report of the late Mr Chand who died on November 7, 2013.

State lawyer Semi Babitu said the doctor would be interviewed via Skype because it was important that he be cross examined during the interview process.

Defence lawyer, Devenesh Sharma said that Defence would not want to delay the trial process, therefore this application being granted was a positive sign of the case being addressed quickly.

The application for the Skype session was granted by Resident Magistrate Rangajeena Wimalasena.

The matter will be called again today.

The accident took place along Kings Road on November 7, 2013, when Kumar’s vehicle allegedly hit the 48-year-old who was rushed to the hospital hours before he died.

Mr Chand is survived by his wife, three children and two grandchildren.
