Five Homeless After Nadi Fire

  Five people are homeless after their nine-bedroom concrete house was destoryed in a fire on Tuesday night. The incident happened at Votualevu, Nadi, and belonged to businessman Suresh Newaj.

Five people are homeless after their nine-bedroom concrete house was destoryed in a fire on Tuesday night.

The incident happened at Votualevu, Nadi, and belonged to businessman Suresh Newaj.

Mr Newaj was attending a prayer session at the time of the incident. His daughter and mother Rattan Kumari, 75 were at home, but they escaped the blaze.

Ms Kumari was emotional seeing the devastation caused by fire.

“This is a painful experience to see this house end up like this,” she said.

Mr Newaj said: “The house belonged to my granddad and has been passed down through generations and we have continued to work on this house.

“We have worked tireless over the years to see this building of ours. Lucky no one has lost their lives, but it is another start for us.

“We could not save any of our belongings, as the fire was to strong.”

According to Mr Newaj the fire started at around 8.45pm.

He said the estimated cause of loss in around $300,000.

A neighbour, Kamlesh Naresh said: “I came running outside and saw that the fire had spread quickly and they tried to stop the fire, but it spread quickly,

National Fire Authority media officer Ritesh Kumar confirmed the incident.

He said their fire officers were investigating the cause of the blaze.
