The $3 million allocated for the Town Wide Informal Settlement Upgrading Programme is expected to see the subdivision of 1200 residential lots in areas around Suva and Nausori.

This was revealed by the Minister for Local Government, Housing, Environment, Infrastructure and Transport, Parveen Kumar, in Parliament on Monday.

He said the programme was for settlements in Qauia, Nadonumai, Wakanisila, Waidamudamu and settlements along the Lami-Suva-Nausori corridor.

Mr Kumar said: “Currently four engineering consultants are preparing the subdivision scheme plans for approving authority’s decision and later prepare the engineering plans for roads, sewerage, water and electricity reticulation and drainage and residential allotments.”

He said Government also allocated $2.13 million for the Squatter Settlement Upgrading Programme in the last two years.

“Under this programme, my ministry is currently undertaking seven squatter settlement upgrading projects,” he said.

“Namely Caubati in Nasinu, Cuvu in Sigatoka, Ledrusasa in Nadi, Sasawira in Nausori, Namara in Labasa and Nakama in Savusavu. Omkar is expected to be completed in December this year.”
