With concerns raised about the use of the two dedicated Police emergency numbers, steps have been taken to ensure calls are attended to in a more efficient manner.

The two numbers include the 917 emergency number which is dedicated for Police emergencies while the 919 number is for those wanting to give information to Crime Stoppers.

However Chief Operations Officer ACP Rusiate Tudravu said they have taken note of the shortfalls the 917 number has at times with regards to the attendance of reports. As such all calls received on this number will now be only received at three Police command centres.

These include centres in all four divisions.

Prior to this, emergency calls that were made to 917 were received at any of the major Police stations.

ACP Tudravu admits that at times, calls were being rerouted to other divisions and laxity on Police’s part to refer the calls to the station concerned, led to the increase in complaints about their service.

However, as a result of this, ACP Tudravu said they have worked with Telecom Fiji Ltd to ensure only the three Command Centres would receive the calls from within their respective divisions. This means anyone who will calls the 917 number from Nausori, will have their call received at the Police Co-ordinating Command Centre (PCCC) in Suva, and the officer who receives the call will then direct officers from Nausori to attend to the report.

ACP Tudravu said they have also been informed by Vodafone Fiji Ltd, that Samsung phone users will not be able to call the 917 number and were assured that upgrading works is being conducted to fix the issue.
