The Kingdom of Tonga will use the 2016 Melanesian Athletics Championship as a preparation platform for next month’s Rio Olympics and the 2019 Pacific Games in Tonga.

Team manager Palu Havea said yesterday they could not turn down the opportunity to participate in the championship as they need all the game time they can get.

“We are proud to be in Fiji,” Havea said.

‘We had a few ups and downs getting here but we are happy to be here. We have already joined the Polynesian Championship in Tahiti and now this international meet is another step-up for us.

“Although we needed help with funds in coming here, Tonga is so close to Fiji that we could not pass this opportunity.”

Tonga will be presented by four athletes taking part in the 100 and 200 metres as well as the 400m hurdle.

Taina Halasima and Siueni Filimone have qualified as wild cards for the Rio Olympics and are hoping to improve their performance at the championship.

“Right now any international meet or competition we can get is a step up and we need to keep at it and also win medals. We have a tough competition ahead from other countries but we are here to do our best and prepare our athletes for the upcoming competitions.”
