Top sailors from all over the world are expected to compete at the 2016 Fiji Challenge at Pacific Harbour, Deuba from August 5-13. The event will be staged at the Uprising Beach Resort and also at Yanuca Island in the famous Beqa Lagoon.

Hobie Fleet 252 stalwart Grahame Southwick said they are expecting teams from South Africa, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and the United States to come and compete.

Southwick has been the brains behind the Fiji Hobie Challenge where he is assisted by fellow fleet members John Philp, Matt Sheppard and Shayne and Torika Brodie.

He said the water sports of such nature have grown bigger and better since 1977.

“We’ve been doing this Fiji Challenge for more than 15 years and more people are coming in every year and they bring their families with them,” Southwick said.

“It is not just the people that are competing but it is also the other people that are coming in with them and associating with them. When they go back they tell the story of how beautiful Fiji is and so on and that’s when more and more people are coming in.”

Southwick was also overwhelmed with the inaugural Fiji Fizz Regatta at Port Denarau last week.

“We have different types of boats that competed in the championship,” he said.

There are actually two races, Southwick says, the Fiji Challenge is a five-day expedition race from one place to another.

He said the challenge would start from the Uprising Beach Resort on the mainland and run out to Yanuca Island in the Beqa Lagoon.

“There’ll be various legs of the challenge in the lagoon and around various islands before returning to the mainland for the last leg.”
