Tough Battle For Olympians

Fijians to face Germany, Korea and Mexico in Rio

A 24- member Vodafone Fijian Under-23 football side marched into camp on Monday to prepare for the Rio Olympic Games next month.

Fiji Football Association vice-president and national team director Tarunesh Reddy said they have monitored the performance of the players during the Vodafone Fijian FACT.

“We were impressed with the fitness level of some players at the Vodafone Fijian  FACT,” he said.

Reddy said the players have been given much exposure playing in build-up matches in Spain and Brazil.

“There is no excuse for non- performance at the Olympics as we have invested heavily on the players and we expect them to perform better. We are grouped in a tough pool and we don’t want to go there and just to make up the numbers.”

The Fijians are pooled with Korea, Mexico and Germany.

They kick-off their campaign against Korea on August 4, Mexico on August 7 and Germany on August 10.

Three senior players are eligible to feature for their teams and it is confirmed that Wellington Phoenix striker Roy Krishna is in the team. Reddy said they will name the final 18 players soon.
