288 Republic of Fiji Military Forces personnel will be deployed to the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) mission in the Golan Heights next month.

This figure includes those who recently returned from Sinai and are training at the Black Rock Camp in Nadi.

RFMF Chief of Staff Colonel Litea Seruiratu confirmed the number for the Fijian Battalion. She said five staff officers would also be based at the UNDOF Head Quarters.

“Priority will be given to those who returned from Sinai,” she said.

Those who were drafted to go, we have moved them back to either Lebanon or Iraq but the numbers remain the same.”

This is part of the normal annual rotation.

Over 100 personnel returned home last month from Sinai having only arrived a few weeks earlier.

Fijian troops have been caught in the crossfire as Sinai has increasingly become a deadly battleground with the Islamic State militants attacking Egyptian forces and positions.
