Mustafa Fall won the first gold medal in the Senior Men’s Discus after throwing 50.28 metres in the 2016 Melanesian Athletic Championships.

Coming in second was Debono Paraka of Papua New Guinea and Setareki Matau of Fiji who took out the bronze medal.

The 21-year-old Marist Brothers High School student said it was a relief winning the gold as there was a lot of pressure on him competing in his own backyard.

“I’m excited and happy,” Fall said.

“I feel relieved now as there was a lot of pressure on me to perform as I am competing and representing my country.”

Fall had only three weeks to prepare and the win was unexpected.

“I was not given ample time to prepare and I was not expecting to win but I gave it my all,” he said.

“I am just glad that everything worked out. It is a lovely feeling competing at home against athletes from overseas especially the senior players.

“I would love to represent Fiji in the Olympics in future. I would like to give credit to my coaches, my mother and all the supporters here in Fiji.”
