Fiji’s Avikash Lal is hoping to take part in more international events.

The 21-year-old from Votualevu, Nadi won gold in the senior men’s 10,000 metres clocking a time of 34.08.16s in the Melanesian Athletics Championship at the ANZ Stadium yesterday.

Lal who is aiming for the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia and the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan said he needs to compete internationally.

“I am hoping Athletics Fiji will send me to more overseas competition because I want to train in Fiji and compete overseas,” he said.

“I know I can do better and have the potential to do great but I need to do more and the only way I know how to do that is to compete overseas as I need to test myself.”

Coming from a farming background has not been easy for Lal but he says, that his parents help him train ever since he started running.

“This has been a huge learning experience for me because I have been representing Fiji since I was 16-years-old. I have trained for this day for more than a year and my dad has been helping me a lot. There has been a lot of struggle I have faced like waking up in the morning at 3am and going for a 10,000m morning run.”

Ashneel Nand of Fiji won silver with a time of 34.28.65s while Rosefelo Siosi of Solomon Islands clocked 34.49.68s to clinch the bronze medal.
