Learning More In Rio: Bob Kumar

The Vodafone Fijian Under-23 side will have a lot to learn from the Rio Olympics in Brazil next month.

The Fijian Football Association chief executive officer Bob Kumar said facing Germany, Korea, Mexico in pool stages should be a learning and rewarding experience for the players.

“We are obviously in a tough pool and no pool is easy at that level,”Kumar said.

“We had a tour of Spain early in the year and then we went to Brazil where we played some good games.

“The team officials are doing everything possible in camp so we hope for the best.”

With the Vodafone U20 team competing in the FIFA U20 World Cup in New Zealand last year, Kumar said the team knows what to expect.

“It will be a big experience for the players and officials. We went to the U20 World Cup last year for the first time and they realised what is involved and what to expect,” he said.

“They know the risks involved and what they need to do in order to ensure they have a good outing.

“Preparations for prestigious tournaments like this are different from preparing for regional tournaments.

“No matter what happens they will, above all, gain a lot of experience and that will help contribute to the development of the sport in the country.

“It is a big year for football as well as many other sports and every competition is also a learning curve.

“I am sure they’ll come back better athletes, better soccer players.”

The Rio Olympic Games is scheduled for August 5-21 in Brazil.
