They are often seen as the shadow of the Vodafone Fijian 7s men’s squad. But our Telecom sponsored Fijiana team must not be written off.

Like the men’s team, they are doing the hard yards, eating the right food and doing all the right stuff.

Vodafone Fijian 7s head coach Ben Ryan did not mince his words when he stated that our Telecom Fijiana side should not be written off. Those who watched their training sessions at the Uprising Beach Resort in Pacific Harbour are brimming with confidence that our girls will be the surprise package of the Olympics.

Their determination and sacrifice to make the trip to Rio and do Fiji proud has seen them overcome obstacles they met along the way. This has built-up their level of confidence and come the day, nothing will be impossible.

Out of the 18 in camp, only 13 will make it to Rio. It will be heartbreaking for the five who will miss out.  But they should all keep their heads high. They have done more than just being great ambassadors of women’s rugby.

They have slowly evolved to be a force of their own – especially as Fiji steps up its awareness and profile of the women’s game. This was one of Ryan’s aims when he arrived in Fiji three years ago. Something he can certainly tick off on his bucket list. And Ryan is backing Chris Cracknell and his top 13 pick. He is hopeful that they can win Fiji’s first medal in Rio.

With less than a month to the Olympics, Cracknell is happy with the girls’ fitness and progress. The challenge will be tough as the Telecom Fijiana face off against the United States of America, Australia and Colombia in their pool game.

But our girls are fit – and ready for anything that stands in their way.
