Fijiana national rugby sevens women’s captain Ana Maria Roqica has a good chance of making it into the final 13-member squad for next month’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Also tipped to make the final cut are former Australian rugby sevens women’s captain Rebeca Tavo and robust Rusila Nagasau.

Fiji Women’s coaching director Chris Cracknell said yesterday they would be looking at flexibility when announcing their final 13.

“Ana Maria as captain has been a standout,” he said.

“Unfortunately she suffered an injury and lacked a bit in fitness but we got three girls that hit level 18 during fitness test this week. All girls are fit, all are over level 16 and they are fighting for their spot each day and they are pushing harder and harder.”

Fijiana head coach Iliesa Tanivula said they have got to get it right from the start.

“It’s pretty intense for the past two weeks, from our end as coaching we got to get it right. Pressure is on, it’s the Olympics we just need to get our selection right,” Tanivula added.

Positional change

Cracknell confirmed that Tavo has been shifted from the backline to the forwards and Nagasau has been moved to rover. She played in the position several times during the Women’s Sevens Series.

“There are some girls that have flexibility and will be named to play either in the forwards or backs,” Cracknell added.

Injuries

Lanky Litia Naiqato and Luisa Basei are two players carrying injuries in the team and Cracknell confirmed they would get their medical report today before finalising their squad.

“Naiqato is carrying an injury that’s probably difficult to make the final call at the moment. Two players are also on question mark because of injuries,” he added.
