The iTaukei Land Trust Board general manager, Tevita Kuruvakadua, says around 5000 outstanding applications are due to be processed given an increase in demand of land and lack of data standards.

“We have kept a hold on those outstanding applications at the moment because some of our data are not up to standard and our people are actually forced to go up to ground to physically inspect before we make any considerations,” Mr Kuruvakadua said.

Therefore in a bid to counter digitalisation and data issues, Mr Kuruvakadua, yesterday urged the participants of the Geo Spatial Science Users Conference at Tanoa Waterfront Hotel in Lautoka, to create a standard land parcel identification system for Fiji with the use of Geographical Information System (GIS).

He said iTLTB’s contribution in regards to creating a standard land parcel identification system for Fiji was of a great interest to the iTaukei Land Trust Board.

“Part of the job for iTLTB is to issue leases on iTaukei land, we have noticed that part of our work has been limited with issues relating to digitalised iTaukei Land Commission (TLC) boundaries members and as such we have been trying to generate a lot of interest in various forums especially our joint committee forum with government to talk about correcting the maps of the digitalised maps that related to TLC boundaries,” Mr Kuruvakadua said.

The TLTB has recently signed 17 Memorandum of Understanding with organisations to counter issues within the TLTB system.
