New Bridge Brings Relief To Wailoku

Daily commuters welcome use, especially heavy goods vehicle drivers

The new Vunidilo Bridge has delivered an immediate positive change for the people of Wailoku in the Central Division.

Fiji Roads Authority Programme Manager for Bridges and Jetties Nixon Toremana said the 35 metre Vunidilo Bridge was completed within six months.

“The bridge has been welcomed by everyone in the Wailoku area who use it on a daily basis, especially the heavy goods vehicle drivers who have had to observe restricted crossing times in the past,” Mr Toremana said.

He said the original bridge structure had been demolished as it was not safe for vehicles and public use due to the deteriorating condition of the bridge superstructure.

“The piles and beams supporting the bridge decking were in poor condition compromising the structural integrity of the existing bridge to support both light and heavy vehicles and pedestrian foot traffic,” he said.

Mr Toremana said the new single lane bridge with a pedestrian footpath would stop the traffic woes of people residing in the area.

“FRA is advising the public to drive carefully across the bridge as per the post speed limits and to use the pedestrian footpath when crossing the bridge at all times,” he said.

Mr Toremana said the new bridge cost FRA approximately $4million under the Bridges and Jetties Renewals Budget.
