Under-Age Children Sent To Buy Cigarettes Unacceptable, Says Ali

Under-age children who are sent to buy cigarette is unacceptable says Ministry of Health, Tobacco Control Enforcement Unit, Acting Manager, Nafiz Ali.

This was after concerns were raised to the unit regarding an under-age boy who was sent to buy a Benson and Hedges 10 cigarette from a shop at 7 pm.

Mr Ali said parents should be responsible even though no agency such as the Police are monitoring them.

“We have had cases in the past where under-age children are sent to shops at night to buy cigarette from shops and houses in their community,” he said.

Mr Ali said parents who are caught in the act will face a $1000 fine while traders will face two fines:

$1000 for selling to under-age children

$1000 for failing to ask for identification.

Mr Ali is urging members of the public to report such act to the Police and help the unit raise awareness about the  issue.
