France based winger Josua Tuisova got his first taste of the Sigatoka sand dunes yesterday morning.

Tuisova admitted to SUNsports that he was put to the real test and was glad that he managed to survive it.

“It’s my first time and it was a tough experience out there, the boys had told me that it was going to be an uphill battle,” he said.

“I grew up watching it on TV and saw photos of it or hear it from the players but today I tasted what it feels like.”

The Toulon winger admitted that he has got tough competition from the likes of captain, Osea Kolinisau, Savenaca Rawaca and Samisoni Viriviri for the winger’s berth.

“I think I have a 50- 50 chance of making the team but if chosen then it will be a happy occasion as I will be playing for Fiji,” he said.

National men’s rugby sevens coach, Ben Ryan said the 22-year-old was thrown into the intensity of the training programme on the sand dunes.

“It hits you straight away since you have to walk up there, the sand dunes get everyone. I did not want to overdo his work load, in training he’s done well, we do not want to push him, we know what he is capable of, we have got a plan around him and it is working.”

Ryan added that Tuisova stands over 110 kilogrammes on the field and has the ability to become a constant threat to the opposition.

“He beats the first defender every time, drags in three other defenders, keep the ball alive, defensively he is an intelligent footballer. He has played in big games where 100, 000 people watched the Top 14 finals, he played in that recently, and has been in the Top 14 team of the year as well,” he said.

Tuisova is in the same class as Waisea Nayacalevu and Savenaca Rawaca.

“We have got two wingers over 110 kilograms and can shift, we have never had two that we have selected since I have been with them. We only had one, now we have got these guys fighting for places along with Samisoni Viriviri and Josh Vici. Four outstanding wingers, the worry I had in the beginning has disappeared now,” Ryan added.
