Fifteen students of Kocoma District School will now be able to travel in a boat to school, all thanks to the Government of the day.

Minister for Education, National Heritage, Culture and Arts Mahendra Reddy yesterday presented the boat and the engine which was valued at $19,000 to the village elders at Waisomo House in Suva.

Speaking at the handover Mr Reddy said initiatives as such were the Government’s way of ensuring that no child was left behind in educational terms.

“The Education Dream we have at the Ministry of Education is ensuring that every child in Fiji no matter where they originate from, are able to realise their dreams and obtain Early Childhood Education, Primary, Secondary and Tertiary education and this determination is seen in the budget,” Mr Reddy said.

Mr Reddy said the boat would definitely be a relief for all the students.

“This boat that we are donating here is a symbol of the journey towards prosperity for the children of Kocoma and Qamea,” he said.

“No longer will the children of the poor, children in squatter settlements, children in the interior of the maritime division will miss out just because they are not part of a few, selected community.

“This boat will provide you with a medium to participate in the journey towards the prosperity for our children.”

Meanwhile, Manager of the school Ilisoni Vakaloloma thanked the Ministry and the Government for the boat.

“I thank the Minister and the Government for the boat as it is a timely assistance for the school and also for the educator’s visitors as hiring a boat is so expensive,” Vakaloloma said.

Kocoma Village representative Josaia Toduadua thanked Mr Reddy and the Government for the aid which he believed was a first of its kind.

“This boat will help almost 15 students from the village and this is the first time any Government Ministry has done this,” Mr Toduadua said.
