The president of the Fiji Bus Operators Association, Parmod Chand, has welcomed Government’s move of having gadgets to monitor purchases.

Mr Chand said it should be done Fiji wide including the transport industry, but more so the bus industry.

“Gadgets prepared to monitor purchases at supermarkets and hardware stores is equivalent to the Fiji Bus Operators Association asking e-ticketing machines to be made compulsory,” Mr Chand said.

“We had a meeting on numerous occasions and unanimously voted that the use of e-ticketing machines should commence. We have been talking with the Government but we don’t know why they are delaying it.

“Why can’t Government immediately make e-ticketing compulsory for all public transport? We have e-ticketing machines in our buses. This has been tried out and bus operators want it.

He believes that once the e-ticketing was made compulsory, passengers bus companies and Government will benefit.

“All passengers will pay bus fare, there will be transparency, income of bus companies will increase and Government will have more tax. When bus companies will have more income there will be no bus fare increase,” he said.

“When passengers will sit in a bus having e-ticketing system they will get a ticket and in case of accident they can use it as a proof. The driver cannot charge passengers more or less because the system will be accurate.

“If you are travelling two stages then it will be two stage fares. If someone complains, we can go back to the system and check whether the passenger’s complaint is valid or not.

“We will also be able to see the loading of the buses.

“It will help us keep a track on the supplementary services provided.”

Meanwhile, when Fiji Sun contacted the Minister for Local Government, Housing, Environment, Infrastructure and Transport, Parveen Kumar he said: “Tell Mr Chand to put all this in writing and send it to me to have a look at.”
