Questions have been raised regarding the vacant commissioner post in the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption.

Public Accounts Committee member and Opposition Member of Parliament Ratu Sela Nanovo questioned FICAC staff yesterday about when the post would be filled.

“You can’t be sailing without a captain, you need a captain there. This is an important institution that is set up to investigate corruption matters, it needs to be fully equipped in order to function accordingly,” Ratu Sela said.

Commission’s senior state lawyer, Francis Pulewai in response said that despite not having a Commissioner since 2007, the Deputy Commissioner has been leading the charge.

“The deputy commissioner has the same powers and duties as the commissioner.

“I cannot say anything as to why we still don’t have a commissioner, but to my understanding the deputy commissioner holds the same powers,” she said.
