Police have reported a 14-year-old girl is admitted at the Lautoka Hospital in critical condition after being hit by a vehicle driven by a 21-year-old man in Lautoka.

Police spokesperson, Ana Naisoro said the accident happened at Berara Place, Field 40 in Lautoka.

“The 21-year-old allegedly bumped three students who were walking along the road,” Ms Naisoro said.

“Suspect made a sudden U-turn when the vehicle veered off the road and allegedly bumped them.”

She said a 14-year-old student was currently admitted at the Lautoka Hospital in a critical condition and the other two, 14 and 9, are also admitted.

However their conditions were not as serious.

The father of Shivia Chand, 14, who is in a coma, was a worried man yesterday when the Fiji Sun approached him at the hospital.

The accident happened about 50 metres from his home while the students were on their way home from school.

“She still has not woken up from yesterday (Thursday) after the accident which happened at around 4pm,” Salesh Chand said.

Mr Chand had just lost his only brother about two years ago in a car accident and seeing the youngest in his family of two lying in hospital is hurting him.

Mr Chand’s daughter is a year nine student along with the other girl at Andhra College with the other being a class three student of Lautoka Andhra Sangam School.

Meanwhile the driver was released from custody after being questioned and Police investigations continue.

Mr Chand said his daughter sustained immense head injuries and he waited for the doctor to inform him of the next steps to save his daughter’s life.

The principal of Lautoka Andhra Sangam College, Aruna Singh, said she was aware of the incident and the school had already sent the report to the Ministry of Education.

“This is a Police matter now and we have submitted our report in regards to the incident to the ministry as they will further look into it,” Ms Singh said.

Ms Singh said a female student of their College was picked up by the driver before the accident occurred and this matter was also being investigated.
