The national men’s rugby sevens team were presented a $14,000 cheque by Teivovo at MHCC in Suva yesterday.

The cheque was handed over to head coach, Ben Ryan and Osea Kolinisau by the students of Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Primary School and Rishikul Sanatan Primary School.

The two schools were part schools in the Central division that  teamed-up with Teivovo to fundraise for Team Fiji, in particular the national men’s rugby sevens team through the selling of wristbands.

Ryan acknowledged the public for their support.

“We have had five weeks of hard work now and the prime minister will announce the squad tomorrow (today),” he said.

“Thank you very much Teivovo and everybody here have been supportive, not only to the boys but Team Fiji and their preparation as athletes prepare in getting their personal best, national record, Oceania record and hopefully some more medals.”

MGM Primary School head teacher Chandra Kumar said they were fortunate to be part of the fundraising campaign.

“The sale of wristbands in school was tremendous and the children were excited and proud to be part of this Rio campaign. They were proud to wear the bands of different colours to support Team Fiji,” she said. MGM Primary School sold a total of 700 wrist bands and collected $1400.

Proud students

Rishikul Sanatan Primary School head teacher Surendra Kumar echoed similar sentiments.

“The children were proud to sell the wristbands and we sold 1125 bands and collected $2252.”

Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC) chief executive officer Lorraine Mar said that when one individual purchase the wrist band they become part of Team Fiji’s journey to Rio.
