Soso Village To Get Piped Water

The villagers of Soso, on Naviti Island in the Yasawas will finally receive improved water supply on Thursday.

Thanks to the government of Japan for providing assistance by the construction of a water supply system through the Vinaka Fiji Yasawa Trust Foundation, the second secretary at the Embassy of Japan, Masayuki Ikeda, will officially hand over the water supply system.

Economic Research and Aid Co-ordinator Peni Saurara said the total value of assistance is $49,878 which is funded under Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) Programme.

“The basis for implementing the project was in 2015, as Vinaka Fiji Yasawa Trust Foundation requested funding for the improvement of the water supply system in Soso Village,” he said.

The village was using a diesel generator to pump water from the existing borehole, but the village could not financially cope with the high cost of running the generator on a daily basis.

There is a long term benefit of the project with the new solar water supply system, equipped with a solar-powered water pump, three water tanks, piping, a control room, etc.
