The last two legs of the 2015-16 World Sevens Series and the four-week hard grind at Uprising Beach Resort and Sigatoka Sand Dunes brought out the best in Viliame Mata.

The former rugby league rep was among the special talent identified by coach Ben Ryan. But  he had been hampered by injuries. Not anymore. He’s in the Olympics team.

“Tough few weeks for an outstanding man who weighs 116kg, he’s so consistently good,”Ryan said.

The Nakelo, Tailevu, native is now looking forward to playing in Rio.

“I feel good and ready to give my best”, he said.

The team returns to camp at the Uprising Beach Resort today and depart for Santiago, Chile via Auckland on July 26. The women depart this Saturday. The Rio Olympics are scheduled for August 5-21.
