A joint anti-drugs operation between the Fiji Police Force and the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) is now underway in the Cakaudrove Province.

Into its second week, more than 1500 plants believed to be marijuana have been uprooted as well as more than 860 seedlings.

Fiji Police Force acting chief operations officer Assistant Commissioner of Police Tito Elo said the decision to work with the RFMF was because of the expertise they had in the field of self-sustained capabilities.

“The team has and continues to be reminded about the importance of following the necessary procedures and processes for the sake of protecting the integrity of the operations and investigations,” ACP Elo said.

“23 people have to date been arrested and produced in court charged with the unlawful cultivation of illicit drugs.

“Five of the twenty three have been remanded.

“The operation which began on the 6th of this month in the Northern Division has been receiving great support from various crime prevention committees and this is something we are grateful for.

“As the Commissioner of Police has stated we cannot fight crime alone, and will need the support of members of the public to rid society of this illegal activity which has devastating effects not only on today’s generation but more importantly our future generation.

“At the same time we request those with information that could help locate farms and identify those involved to come forward and assist us in our operations.”
