The Fiji Pharmaceutical Society is working towards a revamping of the profession of pharmacists here to do more than just dispense medications.

This was highlighted by Society president Reshnika Lata Sen at a mini-seminar organised by the Society at The Pearl Resort and Spa in Pacific Harbour.

“Pharmacists across the world are carrying out home visits doing medication management reviews, running awareness programmes in communities and some have even started issuing sick-sheets.

“That is the future; where the pharmacists are quite literally moving out of the Pharmacies,” she said.

Ms Sen said for this to happen, it would require greater collaboration between other health professionals like doctors and all professional bodies as a whole.

“A time to start moving towards combined effort to treat patients. But that is all in due time,” she said.

The mini-seminar focussed on equipping pharmacists and doctors, as business owners and managers, with the necessary skills and information to run a business, and be successful at it.

It was attended by over 50 participants, mostly doctors and pharmacists, with the theme: “Thriving For success: Overcoming Challenges and building a better workplace.”

Ms Sen said the mini- seminar, being the first event for the Society this year, received a good turnout which was encouraging.

“It is great and leads up to the annual conference which will be held in October in the Fiji Day weekend,” she said.

While the venue has not been confirmed, Ms Sen revealed their annual conference would be held in the Western Division.
