Man Who Raped Teenage Boy Jailed For 12 Years

A man convicted of raping a 15-year-old boy was has been jailed for 12 years.

Justice Thushara Rajasinghe told 36-year-old convicted rapist, Aminiasi Masei, that people his age had a responsibility to look after the safety and well-being of children

The judge said Masei committed the offence when he saw the victim walk into a cane field.

The offence was committed on March 6, 2013 in Lautoka.

During the case, the prosecution produced evidence from the victim, his mother and the investigating officer while the accused did not call any witnesses.

The prosecution’s case was based mainly on the identification of Masei by the victim since they knew each other.

The victim said the accused told him not to tell anyone. Following the incident, the victim had trouble sleeping, with the incident was on his mind and this was when he decided to tell his mother.

“I am mindful of the fact that victims of sexual offences can react to the trauma in different ways,” Justice Rajasinghe said in his judgement.

“Some, in distress or anger, may complain to the nearest person they see.

“Others, who react with shame or fear or shock or confusion, or perhaps due to cultural taboos, do not complain or go to the authorities for some time.

“It takes a while for self confidence to reassert itself,” Justice Rajasinghe said.

Masei has been given a non-parole period of nine years.
